Qld: Beattie may have known of scam, inquiry told = 2

Outside the inquiry, Mr Beattie repeated his previous claims to have been unaware of
any illegal vote-rigging in South Brisbane in 1986.

Mr Beattie said party branches had conducted legitimate - and legal - membership drives
from time to time but he could not remember any complaints about suspicious branch stacking
activities.

"What I recall out of that (1986 South Brisbane) preselection is that it was keenly
contested and hotly contested and there was a lot of argy-bargy about who would win but
