Qld: 200k for botched sterilisation
A woman who gave birth four years after a botched sterilisation procedure has been
awarded more than $200,000 by the Supreme Court in Brisbane.
KERRY ANN MELCHIOR, 48, of Redland Bay, sued Dr STEPHEN CATTANACH and the state of
Queensland, alleging medical negligence over the sterilisation procedure which took place
in March, 1992.
The procedure proved inadequate when Mrs MELCHIOR, already a mother of two daughters,
gave birth in 1996 to her son, JORDAN.
The MELCHIORS sought the cost of raising JORDAN, but the defence claimed the family
should have had the baby adopted.
At the time of the sterilisation procedure, Dr CATTANACH had a practice at Capalaba
on Brisbane's southern outskirts, and operated at the state government-run Redlands Hospital.
